Chairmans End of Seasons Thoughts

Dear All,
Another season completed. This year our 1st XV have finished 5th our highest finish in a number of years and the 2nd XV finished mid-table having performed admirably in many games. As always our results are reflected by availability and that is down to you the players – the more games you make yourself available for, the better the side is, the more enjoyable it is for everyone and we may win more games!

After two years of a nomadic existence playing away from home at a variety of venues I can now say with 100% certainty we will be returning to our home at Farm Avenue.  The new Pavilion is exceptional and will be an extremely modern and first class place for you to play. The pitches are in fantastic condition and it should be a great experience for all of us. From now and for the rest of our playing careers –TT that’s another 20 years, at least.

Now is the time to rest up and enjoy the off-season. Feel free to go to the gym and for an occasional run it does make pre-season easier. With that in mind a date for your diary is Tuesday July 9th for our first training session at the fields. This summer we will also be having a summer event on July 13th at the fields plus an opening ceremony day on September 7th (this is still to be confirmed).

As always finances are the key to many things, and UCS is no exception. Please take a moment to think of any potential sponsors (employers, local business both big and small, generous parents, neighbours, basically anyone) who may be interested in supporting us in the years ahead. We have a fantastic facility that will attract people if you think of anybody contact Matt Jacobs as sponsorship secretary matthew.jacobs.lj@gmail.com .

In regards to recruitment we’re always looking to recruit players. If you know anybody who used to play either at school, university or you work with etc then please contact them and try and get them down to train and play.  We are happy to accept all levels of player from complete novices to seasoned internationals we do not discriminate.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those members of the committee who have put in a considerable amount of their own time to make the playing and social experience the best for everyone. We also say good bye to a number of people who are moving on. Firstly our two coaches Nick and Charlie. I think I speak on behalf of the whole club when I say a big thank you for your interesting training nights and insightful tactical nous at games. We will miss you both but wish you all the success in your future. There is always a place for you at UCS. Another one leaving is Ryan Ovens who has decided to go off travelling for a couple of years he’s had a wonderful year organising social events and we look forward to welcoming him back when he returns. Finally Nat Breakwell our fixture secretary is settling down and moving to the stockbroker belt of Surrey! Nat has been responsible for organising fixtures in the most challenging times UCS has ever faced. At first he had to deal with the last minute drizzle that flooded the fields on a Friday night at the pre-development fields. He then had to use his diplomatic skills when it was deemed that our temporary pitch in Finchley was extremely dangerous. I persuaded him to do another year by saying that it would be easy in the new pavilion and fields. Gotcha, it was another year of pitch juggling. To those who don’t know Nat has performed this job quite brilliantly and without complaints. UCS loss is certainly Surrey’s gain. But, who says the commute to Surrey on a cold wet Tuesday night would be that bad!

We do therefore have a couple of roles available on the committee. If anybody is interested in joining or taking over from Ryan as social secretary please let me know.

Looking forward, we have our new pavilion and bar to make full use of. If you have a function be it social or work related that you would like to hold at the club let me know. On the playing side we are currently in the process of recruiting a new director of rugby to take us forward alongside the existing coaches we have. We expect to name him in the next month.

Finally there is the small matter of tour. If you want to go at this late stage contact Adam McAteer amcateer@uk.ey.com he may be able to squeeze you in. If I don’t see you soon have a great summer.

All the best,

Gideon Bard
UCS RFC Chairman
